We’ve been in China for a few days now. I think three. I’m not sure. My days are running together. I’ve decided I do not like the city. I grew up in the country with wide open space and peace. I don’t like riding crowded subways with people’s armpits in my face, especially here where they don’t where deodorant. I’m trying to accept the culture and get used to it. But I just don’t like it. I don’t like the pushing and shoving and the lack of manners in public. In my opinion, Beijing is a dirty city. With how conscious the Chinese are about getting sick I thought they would be more aware of germs and keeping things clean but it’s the opposite. People hack loogies and little everywhere. It’s disgusting.
The food is pretty good. But all the oils and spices give me stomachaches. But I still like it. We’ll see though if I still like it in a few weeks after having it everyday. Eating with chopsticks has been interesting. Some days I’m pretty good with it and other days I just can’t do it. But it’s something we’re all working on.
Yesterday we got bus and subway cards for the city. So now we can go anywhere in Beijing. It’s pretty exciting and makes me feel like I can do what I want. But it’s also scary. I’m not used to big cities and people here wont help if I’m in trouble. It’s just how they are. It’ll be nice when in a few weeks I’ll be able to remember things and get around without a leader.
We went to two markets yesterday. The first one was the Zoo market. I didn’t like this one. It was super crowded and people were always pushing and yelling. It was huge. Most things looked used and old though in my opinion. Then, we went to another market, called the Silk market. It’s more for tourists and most of the venders speak some English. I liked this market. The vendors would put things in our faces and grab us wanting us to come in and buy things. I liked this one so much better. It wasn’t as crowded and I liked the feeling of people wanting my money and catering to me and showing me all their items. Some other people hated it but I loved it that people wanted to show me things.
oh..and there is snow here
If you like to be catered to than you should go on a cruise. They cater to your every whim. I think Kirsten you have a lot of whims that need to be catered to! lol. Have a great day and you might want to buy some deodorant and pass it around the next time you are at the market. lol.
